Pre-Owned St. Petersburg 202N 4/4 BBb Tuba - Silver/Nickel Plate (Player's Special)

For sale is a Pre-Owned St. Petersburg 202N 4/4 BBb Tuba, serial number 2249. Built in Russia, St. Petersburg tubas have earned a massive cult following for delivering a famously huge, dark, and room-filling sound in a surprisingly compact chassis. This specific instrument is what we call a true "Player's Horn." While it has seen plenty of action and is cosmetically rough around the edges, it seals well, plays beautifully, and pushes a wall of sound that will rival tubas three times its price.

This is the ultimate budget-friendly powerhouse for the gigging community band player, brass band enthusiast, or advancing student. If you need a 4-valve rotary BBb tuba with a legitimate, professional-sized sound but don't want to spend $6,000+, this is your horn. It is the perfect choice for the player who cares more about how an instrument sounds on stage than how it looks in the case. Put in a little elbow grease with some polish, and you'll have an absolute tank of a tuba.

The "St. Petersburg 202N" Advantage

  • The "Russian" Sound: St. Petersburg tubas are famous for their incredibly dark, broad, and weighty tone. Despite being a slightly more compact 4/4 size, the large .830" bore allows you to push a massive volume of air, creating a rich foundation for any ensemble.
  • 4-Valve Rotary System: Equipped with four rotary valves, this tuba provides you with the alternate fingerings needed for improved intonation and seamless technical facility in the lower register.
  • Compact 4/4 Size: While it delivers a full-sized sound, the wrap of the tuba is ergonomically friendly and manageable, making it much easier to hold and transport than traditional, overly bulky 4/4 tubas.

Condition Report

  • Finish: Silver/Nickel Plate (Heavily Tarnished). Let's be honest—this horn needs a bath! It is currently heavily tarnished and is crying out for a good, deep polish job. Once polished, it will shine up nicely, though normal plating wear from use should be expected.
  • Body: Player's Condition. The horn is pretty beat up around the bottom bow, displaying several dents, dings, and scratches consistent with heavy use. However, it is structurally very sound. The geometry of the horn is intact, there are no leaks, and none of the cosmetic damage affects the acoustic performance.
  • Mechanics: It plays great! The rotary valves are moving well, the slides pull, and it produces a fantastic, resonant sound. Our shop has looked it over to ensure that, despite its cosmetic flaws, it is mechanically ready to make music.
