The "Transitional": A Bridge to a New Era
The term "Transitional," while not an official Conn designation, is affectionately used by collectors and players to describe the pivotal period around 1930 when Conn designers completely revamped their instruments. This era saw the introduction of a new alto that borrowed the best features of the past—such as rolled tone holes, Reso-pads, and adjustable pivot screws—and combined them with a series of entirely new mechanisms.
This horn is a physical record of that change, characterized by:
- Evolving Keywork: Most notably, it features a switch from split bell keys to bell keys on one side of the horn. This was a significant ergonomic upgrade that would define Conn's future models.
- Underslung Octave Key: A key feature unique to the alto from this period is the underslung octave key, designed to protect it from damage and give the horn a distinct feel.
- Modernized Ergonomics: Conn repositioned most of the keys for a more direct mechanical action, added a swivel thumb rest, and made a number of other improvements to give the player a far superior feel and faster action than previous models.
