Vintage 1977 Selmer Paris 4-Valve Piccolo Trumpet - "Maurice André" Era
For sale is a rare Vintage Selmer Paris 4-Valve Piccolo Trumpet, serial number 65619. Manufactured in 1977, this is the iconic "Short Model" designed in collaboration with Maurice André, the father of the modern piccolo trumpet. While it shows significant cosmetic wear, it remains a fully functional professional instrument that delivers the authentic, complex French sound that defined the Baroque revival.
This is the perfect instrument for the dedicated trumpet student, church musician, or collector who needs a professional piccolo trumpet on a budget. If you want the authentic sound of the 1970s solo recordings but cannot afford a brand new Schilke P5-4 (which costs $4,000+), this vintage Selmer is the "real deal" for a fraction of the price.
The "Maurice André" Model
In the 1970s, this was the benchmark for piccolo trumpets.
- Sound: Unlike modern piccolos which can sound bright and laser-like, the Selmer Paris models are prized for a warmer, woodwind-like tone (often described as oboe-like) that blends beautifully with strings and organ.
- 4-Valve Configuration: The 4th valve extends the range down a perfect fourth, allowing the player to perform the full Baroque repertoire with greater facility and intonation control.
- Short Wrap: This "Short Model" features a very compact wrap, which brings the weight closer to the hands and provides a unique feedback to the player.
Condition & "The Weirdness"
This is a true "Player's Condition" instrument.
- Lacquer: There is significant lacquer loss throughout the body, giving it a raw, vintage patina. It is ugly, but it sings.
- Replaced Slide: The main tuning slide appears to have been replaced at some point (the finish is shinier and does not match the rest of the horn). However, it fits perfectly and functions as intended.
- Mechanics: Despite the looks, the valves are compressing well and all slides move freely. It plays as it should.
